UW Board of Regents President Mari Clack named a panel of 18 to begin the search for a new UW president at the April 22 board meeting. Among the diverse group are regents, faculty, students, staff and seven UW alumni, including three UW Alumni Association presidents.
Last January, President William P. Gerberding announced that he will leave the UW presidency in June, 1995, which will be 16 years after he took over as president.
The presidential search committee chair is Regent Paul W. Skinner. Other regents on the committee include: Scott D. Oki; H. Jon Runstad, ’65; and Andrew V. Smith.
Alumni named to the panel include: Virginia Anderson, ’75, director, Seattle Center; Garfield R. Jeffers, ’62, president, Jeffers, Danielson, Sann & Aylward; Mary E. Pugh, ’54, ’60, president, Pugh Capital Management; Richard Sprague, ’53, partner, Bogle and Gates; and UW Alumni Association President Sheila Manus Vortman, ’69, ’85, vice president, Puget Power. The two past UWAA presidents on the committee are Runstad (1982-83) and Sprague (1966-68).
UW faculty, staff and students on the committee include: Faculty Senate Chair Ronald B. Dear; Nursing Dean Emeritus Rheba de Tornyay; UW M.B.A. Program Director Leighanne Harris, ’71, ’73, ’79; English Professor Charles Johnson; ASUW President Phil Neiswender; Medicine Chair Paul G. Ramsey; Anthropology Professor Julie K. Stein; Forest Resources Dean David B. Thorud; and the GPSS president, who was not elected at press time.
“This committee reflects the diversity and complexity of this institution, not only internally but as a vital component of the greater Washington state community,” Clack said.
“I want to emphasize that this is a search committee. The selection of a new president is the responsibility of the Board of Regents.”
