The University of Washington received more than $356 million in grant and contract awards for 1990-91, up 3 percent over the previous record set in 1989-90. Over the same period, royalty/license fee income, derived from the UW’s technology transfer program, jumped from $ 1.8 million to nearly $2.7 million.
For more than 20 years the UW has ranked among the top five universities in the country in federal grant and contract awards. Since 1975, it has ranked first among public universities. Based on the latest available figures (1988-89), the UW ranked first among publics and third among all universities, with only Johns Hopkins and MIT earning more federal income.
The high national ranking and the increase in federal funding reflect the excellence of the University’s faculty and the diversity of its programs, says Vice Provost for Research Alvin L. Kwiram.
The technology transfer program which involves finding suitable opportunities in the private sector for utilizing the results of University research, began in 1983. The University has granted more than 160 licenses. Currently the program is evaluating more than 400 invention disclosures for their commercial potential.
