Columns comes to your computer through Internet connections

Starting Dec. 1, the text of Columns magazine will be available through the Internet to the more than 25 million worldwide users of this computer network. Private services with links to the Internet may also have access to Columns, depending on the level of service they provide.

To access Columns, your service will need to include the “telnet” protocol. You access the University of Washington Information Navigator (UWIN) and go through its simple, step-by-step menus. UWIN is also the place to look for the Universities Libraries’ on-line catalog, UW Job Bulletin listings and a complete UW calendar of events.

Here are the steps you need to take from your local computer:

enter: telnet uwin.u.washington.edu
login: anonymous
password: [you should enter your email address, such as 71100@compuserv.com]

Follow the menu, using your cursor keys to move through the items. You will find Columns under the “UW News and Information” heading. To immediately access the magazine, type ‘T’ for “Jumpstart” and then type “Columns” in the highlighted field. You will jump to the menu for Columns magazine. Readers will find all of the text of the June, September and December 1994 issues.

Other on-line services that may be coming in the future include full “ftp” file transfer capabilities, a sound and image version of Columns on the World Wide Web and an on-line mail list discussion group for UW alumni. This discussion group would feature UW news as it happens plus the opportunity for alumni to comment about issues at their alma mater.

For questions about Columns and UWIN, contact Editor Tom Griffin at the e-mail address “griffin@u.washington.edu” on the Internet.
