Columns won two First Place Awards and two Second Place Awards in the 1993 Excellence in Journalism Competition, the western Washington chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), announced May 7.
The First Place Award in arts news and features in magazines went to Editor Tom Griffin for his cover story on the glass artist Dale Chihuly, ’65, “Spontaneous Combustions,” published in June 1993.
The First Place Award in science and health news and features in magazines went to former Associate Editor Jean Reichenbach for her personal article on ovarian cancer, “A Life Sentence,” the December 1993 cover story.
The Second Place Award in general news reporting in magazines also went to Reichenbach for her article on fraternities, “Honor House or Animal House?” in the June 1993 issue.
Another Second Place Award went to Magazine Designer Ken Shafer for his cover layouts in the March, June and December 1993 issues.
Earlier this year, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), District VIII, also honored Columns with four awards.
The Silver Award in Magazine Writing went to UW Writer Joel Schwarz for his human subjects research article, “The Human Factor,” published in December 1993. The Bronze Award in Magazine Writing was given to UW Writer L.G. Blanchard for his materials science article, “Doing What Comes Naturally,” published in September 1993.
The Bronze Award in Magazine Publishing Programs went to Editor Tom Griffin and Designer Ken Shafer. The Bronze Award in Photography was given to UW Photographer Mary Levin for her Seattle skyline photo on the cover of the March 1993 issue.
Since it was born in 1989, Columns has won 27 awards in writing, editing, design, photography and magazine publishing in regional and national competitions.
