Enrollment steady as 33,536 attend fall 1990 courses

Enrollment at the University of Washington remained stable as 33,536 students began fall quarter, said Vice President for Student Affairs Ernest Morris.

The total is slightly more than the 33,238 students enrolled in the fall of 1989 because of the new, undergraduate evening-degree program offered through UW Extension.

The University is keeping about the same student population mix, with 24,566 undergraduates and 8,970 graduate and professional students. The number of women students also matches previous years, with 16,362 women—about 49 percent of the total. About 82 percent of the student body is from the state of Washington.

The UW continues to attract minorities, as 20.7 percent of the total population come from Asian, black, Hispanic or American Indian backgrounds. The percentage is slightly higher than last year’s 19.6 percent.

The number of newly enrolled freshmen direct from high school is 3,579.

Because the state has kept an enrollment lid on the student population, the University’s enrollment has remained steady over the 1980s. The enrollment record for the UW came in 1979, when 37,547 students attended fall quarter.
