Husky football team punches ticket to Rose Bowl

For the first time in nine years, the University of Washington football team will play in college football’s classic New Year’s contest, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. As of mid-November, the likely opponent appeared to be the Hawkeyes of the University of Iowa.

The last time the Huskies appeared in the Rose Bowl was New Year’s Day, 1982, when the team beat the University of Iowa 28-0. Other Rose Bowl appearances during Coach Don James’ 16-year career include a 1978 victory over Michigan, 27-20, and a 1981 loss to Michigan, 23-6.

In the last 13 years, the Huskies have appeared in 11 bowl games, earning an 8-3 record. In the first 100 years of Husky football, the team has appeared in the Rose Bowl 10 times, with an overall record of 4-5-1.

The Los Angeles Hyatt Regency in downtown LA will be the official “Husky Headquarters” for Rose Bowl fans. A New Years’ Eve rally, sponsored by the UW Alumni Association, will be held at the hotel beginning at 8 p.m. Special room packages are available for those identifying themselves as “Husky fans,” with an extra discount for UWAA members. Call the Hyatt Regency at (213) 683-1234 for more information.

The UWAA also has information on a travel charter package from Seattle. Call 543-0540 in Seattle or 1-800-AUW-ALUM outside of Seattle for information on events, hotels and travel packages only. For tickets to the Rose Bowl, call the Husky Ticket Office at (206) 543-2200.
