The UW and Ballard High School grad keeps getting honored for her work as sharp-tongued comedian Deborah Vance in “Hacks.”
“Hacks” has been renewed for its fifth season, and Smart might just earn her seventh Emmy.
When the Primetime Emmy Award nominations were announced on July 15, you’ll never guess who received another one: Jean Smart, ’74, for her performance as snarky comedian Deborah Vance in the HBO show “Hacks,” which also received Emmy nods for Best Comedy Series, Best Comedy Casting, Best Costumes, Best Hairstyling and more.
Smart, who received her bachelor’s degree from the UW School of Drama, has already taken home six Primetime Emmy Awards, including three for her work on “Hacks.”
The nomination was a perfectly timed pick-me-up for Smart, who had to stop performing her one-woman Broadway show “Call Me Izzy” because of a knee injury. That play, written by Jamie Wax, chronicles the life of a rural Louisiana woman trapped in an abusive marriage who finds an escape by writing poetry. Two-time Tony Award nominee Johanna Day replaced Smart from July 15-18.
This is the first time the Seattle native has been acting on Broadway in 25 years. She last performed on the big stage opposite Nathan Lake in the 2000 revival of “The Man Who Came to Dinner.”
On Sept. 14, the Seattle native and Ballard High School alum will be back in her adopted hometown of Los Angeles for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony at the Peacock Theater. Odds are Smart will need to clear space on her mantle for another honor.
