Locke names 3 new UW Regents

Gov. Gary Locke announced Oct. 8 the appointment of three new regents for the University of Washington: Gerald Grinstein of Bellevue, chairman of Delta Air Lines; Ark Chin, ’50, ’52, of Seattle, a retired engineer; and Jeff Brotman, ’64, ’67, of Bellevue, who helped found Costco Wholesale.

They replaced three regents whose terms had expired: Samuel Stroum, who served 13 years; H. Jon Runstad, ’65, who served 11 years; and Scott Oki, who served nearly six years.

Grinstein, chairman of the board of Delta Air Lines, served as chairman and chief executive officer of Burlington Northern from 1989 until 1995. During that period, he was one of the co-chairs of the Campaign for Washington, the UW’s first major fund drive, which raised more than $284 million. For his service to the UW, he shared the UW Recognition Award in 1995. He is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School. Grinstein’s term expires Sept. 30, 2004.

Chin was president and CEO of Kramer, Chin and Mayo, a Seattle engineering firm with clients worldwide, until his retirement in 1989. Chin earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the UW He was named Engineer of the Year in 1990 by the Washington Society of Professional Engineers. Chin’s term runs until Sept. 30, 2003.

Brotman, who helped found Costco Wholesale and a number of other specialty retail chains, represents the third generation in his family to participate in manufacturing, wholesaling and retail merchandising in the Pacific Northwest and Canada. He earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Washington. He led United Way of King County’s 1997 fund-raising campaign, which achieved the largest of increase in new dollars in the history of United Way in the U.S. He and his wife, Susan, shared the 1998 UW Recognition Award for their service to the University and the community. He serves a term expiring Sept. 30, 2004.
