Hedges retires
After 12 years, 7 months and 27 days of running the UW sports program, Intercollegiate Athletics Director Barbara Hedges retired Jan. 16, following months of controversy over a gambling football coach and a drug-dispensing team doctor.

Drug inquest
The UW is investigating charges that a former team physician may have distributed prescription drugs without following proper medical procedures, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Oct. 23.

Life in the fast lane
As a UW freshman back in 1970, Jan Harville, ’74, saw a notice for women’s rowing that said, “No experience necessary.” With no experience as a rower, she decided to go for it. Little did she know her decision would lead her to a 25-year career.
Neuheisel punished
UW Football Coach Rick Neuheisel has been prohibited from off-campus recruiting activities until May 31, 2003, and his former employer, the University of Colorado, was placed on two years probation.

Former Husky basketball star Lorenzo Romar was hired April 4 as the new men’s basketball coach at the University of Washington.
Curtis Williams, 1978-2002
Former Husky football player Curtis Williams, who was paralyzed below the neck after an injury in the 2000 UW-Stanford game, died of natural causes May 6 at the home of his brother in Fresno, Calif.

Dick Erickson, ’58, was a Husky Hall of Fame rower who coached the Husky varsity crew for 20 years and spent nearly four decades serving the UW athletic department.
