Don Coryell, ’50, ’51, was a Husky defensive back who went on to become one of the greatest offensive coaches in football history.


Rounding home

Often overlooked during the Mariners' playoff runs of the 1990s was the fact that the starting third baseman was a Husky: Mike Blowers, who played two years at the University of Washington (1985-86).

One of the most iconic figures in Husky football history, Jim Owens, died June 6 at his home in Bigfork, Mont. He was 82.

Marquis Cooper, 1982-2009

Former Husky football standout Marquis Cooper and two other passengers aboard his 21-foot fishing boat were presumed dead March 6 after the vessel capsized in rough seas near Clearwater, Fla., five days earlier. He was 26.

David Kopay, '64, became the first professional athlete from a major team sport (he retired from the NFL in 1972) to announce publicly that he was gay.

Progress on stadium

State lawmakers are considering a plan to help finance the renovation of Husky Stadium by tapping funds currently used to pay for professional stadiums in King County. A decision is expected before they adjourn March 12.

But the nation wasn’t convinced that the Huskies were all that tough during the 1960 season, despite their 9–1 record. On Jan. 2, Minnesota, with an 8–1 record, was a seven-point favorite, perhaps because the Huskies were so battered. But the oddsmakers were wrong.
